Staying Focused: Tips to Keep You on Track

Many entrepreneurs struggle to keep distractions at bay, but the good news is there are plenty of ways to help you more effectively manage your time, tasks, and focus.

Here are some simple tips to stay on track and hit your goals:

  1. Do Just One Thing: A surefire way to get everything done is to do one thing – and just one thing – at a time. Multitasking can seem like a great way to be productive, but instead we make more mistakes, find it more difficult to tune out distractions, and lack the focus needed for creativity.
  2. Time Management: The Magic of Time Blocking Time blocking is a game-changer when it comes to focus, especially for those managing ADHD. Simply break your day into focused time chunks. Set aside specific periods for emails, client calls, or creative work, and don’t forget to include short breaks to recharge.
    • Pro tip: Use tools like Google Calendar and apps like Toggl to help keep track of your time.
  3. Task Management: Make It Bite-Sized Big projects can feel overwhelming. Break them down into smaller, manageable tasks. Instead of “Build a website,” try something like “Choose a template,” “Write homepage copy,” and “Upload product photos.” Ticking off those smaller tasks gives you a sense of progress and keeps you moving forward.
  4. Focus Hacks: Eliminate the Noise Distractions are the enemy! Try using noise-cancelling headphones, putting your phone in Do Not Disturb mode, or setting specific times to check social media. If you find it hard to stay focused, the Pomodoro Technique (working in 25-minute bursts with 5-minute breaks) can do wonders for your concentration.*
  5. Prioritize and Stick to It: When your mind is buzzing with a million ideas, it’s tempting to bounce from task to task. A good way to stay on track? Prioritize! Make a list of 3 must-dos for the day and stick to them. Anything else you get done is icing on the cake! (Just write down tasks that pop into your head and come back to them later to limit distractions.)
  6. Double It and Pass It On: Do you work better if you have someone nearby to keep you company? Body doubling – working on a task with someone else – is a helpful tactic, especially for those with ADHD. Simply having someone present can be enough to keep you on task. Work alone? Try a co-working space or search YouTube and TikTok for virtual options.
  7. Keep Your Environment Clutter-Free: A messy workspace equals a messy mind. Keep your desk and surroundings organized to help maintain your focus. Clear space, clear head!

* Confession: I need background noise to focus, and there are Spotify and YouTube playlists that are perfect background noise. Look for keywords like “music for work” and find your favorites. (I like lo-fi and Classical versions of pop songs, so there is quite literally something for everyone.)
